‘Super hospital’ proposal to serve Morecambe

A large “super hospital” could be built to serve the whole of Morecambe Bay.

The idea has been proposed in an ongoing review of health care across north Lancashire and south Cumbria.

According to the Better Care Together review, most NHS services would be put into the hospital, although a study is still being carried out to determine where it would be built if the idea progresses.

It is unclear what the move would mean for the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Morecambe Bay health trust’s other hospitals in Kendal and Barrow. The review says the new hospital would be supported by smaller ones.

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron said the move would help the financially-challenged trust save money. Mr Farron said: “More and more medical clinicians are saying that a new, acute hub hospital could be the best way for Morecambe Bay to improve patient safety, access and help with financial savings. These are difficult challenges our trust faces but this is an option that could put the trust on a sustainable footing.”

The review is being carried out by the trust and clinical commissioning groups in both counties.
