Hospitals boss quits

Tony Halsall

Tony Halsall

The head of a troubled hospital trust has quit.

Tony Halsall, chief executive at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, announced on Friday he was stepping down.

The trust is currently being investigated following several deaths at the baby unit at Furness General Hospital, in Barrow, Cumbria.

Health watchdogs are also probing emergency care procedures at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Mr Halsall said: “This has been an extremely difficult time for me personally and professionally. I have always been totally committed to driving through the changes that are essential in order to ensure high quality patient care for the patients of South Cumbria and North Lancashire.

“I believe that considerable progress has been made in recent months to address a number of issues the Trust faces but I recognise that it is now appropriate for the lead to be taken by a new chief executive.”

Deputy chief executive Tim Bennett will take the top job for the next two weeks.

#6 You are quite right, it is the fault of the Government, the last (and I hope it will be the last) Labour Government.

#5 a little, it did make me laugh, I knew he was a liar, but when I discovered the truth I just cant understand why someone so supposedly upstanding would do such a thing.

I know I am - without his unique views on everything as a point of reference, I'm struggling to identify political persuasions! On this story, I can't help feeling that there is some sort of government - press campaign to undermine as many NHS Trusts as possible, causing the general public to lose faith in the NHS and 'forcing' the health sector into private control. Now, I accept something bad seems to have been going on at these hospitals, but having been forced to make some unbelievable and almost impossible decisions about budgets - thanks solely to the goverment - it is no wonder these Trusts are struggling to maintain patient care. Well done Dave you slimy worm, your Iron Lady must be feeding you a biscuit and scratching your tummy as we speak.
