Dragons bring a taste of the Orient to docks

ROARING: The Launch of the Preston Charities Dragon Boat Race which will take place in July

ROARING: The Launch of the Preston Charities Dragon Boat Race which will take place in July

Dragon boats sailed into Preston Marina to give a roaring start to the Preston Guild celebrations.

The inaugural Dragonboat event for Preston Guild 2012 will take place on July 21 as part of the Riversaway Festival and nine charities will be locked in a battle to rule the waves.

Representives from each of the charities and an authentic Chinese dragon met at Preston docks to launch the event where they got a preview of the boats.

Each boat, which will hold a team consisting of 20 paddlers along with a drummer, will cover a 250m course and teams will take part in a number of heats.

The nine charities are the Royal Air Forces Association, St Catherine’s Hospice, Derian House Children’s Hospice, NSPCC, Christian Aid, Galloways, Age Concern, Heartbeat and Caritas Care.

Darrell Slater-Smith of the Royal Air Forces Association, said: “We are delighted to launch the inaugural charity Dragonboat Event for Preston Guild which promises to be a truly memorable event.

“This will be a focal point within the Guild celebrations.”

Jill Kirkham, community fundraiser for Derian House said, “We’re hoping as many people as possible will sign up to join a Dragonboat Team and help raise as much money as possible for the charities.”
