84-year-old’s NHS speech receives standing ovation at Labour Party conference
Dilys Greenhalgh addresses delegates at the Labour party conference in Manchester durng the NHS debate.
An 84-year-old Morecambe resident received a standing ovation when she gave an impassioned speech against the ‘dismantling’ of the NHS.
Dilys Greenhalgh, who worked in children’s hospitals including Manchester’s Booth Hall, even before the National Health Service (NHS) was formed, received a standing ovation from delegates at the Labour Party conference in Manchester.
Conference chairman Angela Eagle MP politely interrupted the pensioner’s speech to tell her she had run out of time when she exceeded her allotted three minutes.
“There will have to be some hanky panky if you don’t leave the platform now,” she joked, only to be told “I’m sorry I can’t hear you,” by the delegate, who continued.
Ms Eagle quipped “that’s a nice try”, but the delegated pressed on, saying “I’m nearly finished”.
“No, no, no,” Ms Eagle said, but Mrs Greenhalgh had the crowd including shadow chancellor Ed Balls on her side, and when they shouted “more! more!” she got to finish her speech.
Mrs Greenhalgh has become a well known figure with parents on the streets of Morecambe, often campaigning outside the town’s schools and Sure Start Centres in her attempts to safeguard health services and children’s facilities.
She has been accompanied in her campaigning by Coun Margaret Pattison and Coun David Whittaker, who joined her at the conference.
