More than 3,000 Lancastrians joined a nationwide campaign to help make up a shortfall in new blood donors.

The National Blood Service’s 100,000 New Donors in 100 Days has been hailed a huge success after the target was smashed two weeks early.

A total of 3,283 people from Lancashire showed their heart in the run up to Valentine’s Day joining the 119,907 that signed up across England and North Wales. The new donors will help ensure that blood stocks are protected.

Jon Latham, for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign.”
