The chilling facts and personal stories behind the work of the nation’s hangmen and those they executed are on exhibition at The Dukes gallery.
Hangmen coincides with the run of the theatre’s new co-production of Pierrepoint – The Hangman’s Tale.
As well as featuring the life and work of Albert Pierrepoint, England’s last and most famous hangman, the exhibition gives visitors the chance to discover more about others who plied the same trade, some at Lancaster Castle.
Lancaster earned the grim reputation as The Hanging Town between the late 18th and mid 19th Centuries when the crown court at the Castle sentenced more people to hang than any other in England, apart from the Old Bailey in London.
Hangmen runs from January 31 to February 23. It is open from 10am to 11pm.
