Green light for new housing development

Plans were lodged by Hollinwood Homes Ltd for 61 homes, on brownfield land off Whittingham Lane in Broughton.

Councillors raised fears over elements of the application, but the scheme was approved by seven votes to four.

The latest planning committee meeting was told permission was granted for homes on the site in 2004, and the most recent plans were recommended for approval with conditions.

The proposal was for a mix of detached homes, terraced townhouses, semi-detached and terraced bungalows, and apartment blocks.

A report to the committee said the detached homes would have four or five bedrooms, the bungalows would have three bedrooms, the townhouses would have two and three bedrooms, and the apartments would have two bedrooms.

It said the proposal would provide 12 affordable shared-ownership homes, 20 per cent of homes on the site, and the meeting was told a 35 per cent contribution would “render the development unviable”.

Letters of objection had been received, and councillors said they were worried about parts of the plans.

Coun Pauline Brown said she was concerned about access and safety, and said: “There’s going to be at least 120 cars. That’s a heck of a lot of traffic in and out, which is going to be a real problem for that estate.”
