A loving sister has given her brother the gift of life by donating one of her kidneys.

Joanne Boylan, 44, of Leyland, near Preston was the perfect match for brother Rick and the successful transplant took place just days before his 40th birthday.

It’s what I’d like to think what anyone would do for their family or a loved one. It is lovely to know it’s been a success and see Rick looking so well.

In a uncanny twist, the siblings’ transplant comes 13 years after their own dad David, now 70, donated one of his kidneys to their mum Margaret after beating odds similar to winning the Lottery to be a match.

Rick, 40, who has made an amazing recovery, today said: “It is all a bit unusual as I have one of my sister’s kidneys while my mum has one of my dad’s kidneys! I am so grateful to Joanne for what she has done for me as she has given me my life back.”

Joanne, 44, a mum-of-one, said: “It’s what I’d like to think what anyone would do for their family or a loved one. It is lovely to know it’s been a success and see Rick looking so well.”

Margaret, 69, who says she has felt amazingly well ever since husband David gave her one of his kidneys, said: “It was strange to see history repeat itself and the day of the transplant was horrendous as both our children were going through a major operation at the same time. We are glad things have had such a happy ending and are proud of Joanne.”
