Get ready to party! That’s the cry across Preston as the city gets ready to enjoy its biggest-ever free night-time party– and it’s open to anyone over 18.

Superstar DJs MistaJam and Craig Charles will perform at Preston’s Purple Party.

Preston Business Improvement District (BID) has lined up the event to celebrate the city’s Purple Flag status, recognising the city centre as a safe and vibrant night out, and support the night-time economy during the traditionally quiet post-Christmas period.

The Purple Party, on January 30, will take the form of a huge free gig on the Flag Market, with thousands of free tickets available.

BID events manager Mark Whittle said today that 3,000 tickets had already been snapped up.

Up to 5,000 revellers are expected to attend.

A world-class sound and lighting system, together with a live visual and FX show, will create an outdoor nightclub with the special guest DJs performing to the audience from the balcony of the historic Harris Museum and Art Gallery.

MistaJam, an international name through presenting on BBC Radio One and performing at the UK’s biggest festivals and weekly residencies at some of the world’s best super-clubs such as Ibiza Rocks and Mallorca’s BCM, will perform a headline set.

BBC Radio Two’s DJ Craig Charles – known for playing Lister in Red Dwarf, presenting Robot Wars and 10 years on Coronation Street – will perform his hugely popular live funk and soul set.

The Liverpudlian, who has now left the Corrie cobbles to concentrate on his career in music, is a huge hit on the soul scene with the ‘Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club’ successfully touring the UK’s clubs and festivals for several years and most recently releasing a hit compilation album.

Mark Whittle said: “We have been promising this will be the biggest free night-time party Preston has ever seen since we first launched the event in late September and now we can truly back that up.

“We have two acts that are incredibly well known between them and will appeal to a wide and varied audience, which is exactly what we want to attract to our great city.

“The whole point of the Purple Party is to get thousands of people into the city early on to enjoy a good time before heading out into our local nightspots to enjoy what Preston has to offer – award-winning nightlife and a huge welcome.

“Tickets are free, but limited, and we are urging people to apply now and help us paint Preston purple.”
