Doctors and nurses from St Catherine’s Hospice will be swapping their stethoscopes for Santa suits this December - and are urging the people of Lancashire to sign up now to join them.

The dozen-strong team, made up of doctors, nurses and nursing assistants, will join a fantastic flurry of Father Christmases pounding the pavements for two miles around Lostock Hall for the annual fund-raising Santa Dash.

“The Santa Dash is always great fun as everyone gets in the festive spirit and has a giggle getting dressed up in their red suits and white beards!”

The popular event will take place this year on Sunday, December 6, once again as part of the St Catherine’s Christmas Festival on December 5 and 6 in the hospice grounds.

This year’s event is set to be extra special as St Catherine’s celebrates the end of a fantastic 30th anniversary year.

Attractions will include a giant snow globe, Santa’s grotto, gift stalls, craft fayre and pop-up ice rink.

The Mill café will be open for hot drinks and festive treats, and the catering team will be serving up winter warmers and mulled wine.

Saturday’s event will even welcome real-life reindeers which visitors can feed.

This year, to mark their milestone birthday, St Catherine’s is hoping to have 300 people taking part in Sunday’s Santa Dash as part of the Give A Gift appeal, run in partnership with Guardian.

Senior staff nurse Alison Dick, who has rounded up the in-patient unit staff to take part, encouraged members of the public to join them for what is set to be a fun family event.

She said: “A few of us who work together have been working to get in shape using the ‘couch to 5km’ app – it’s created a bit of a buzz around the unit and it’s nice that it’s something we can share and work on together.

“The Santa Dash is the perfect opportunity for us as it ties in with our training, but most importantly will be such good fun!

“It was important to us to make a contribution to all the incredible fund-raising which has been going on this year, raising money through sponsorship to help fund the hospice’s vital care.”

Along with the Santa Dash, there will be a half-mile Rudolph Rumble – wearing antlers and red noses - for children aged eight and under.

Norman Cutler, senior fund-raiser and Santa Dash organiser, said: “The Santa Dash is always great fun as everyone gets in the festive spirit and has a giggle getting dressed up in their red suits and white beards.

“We want to make this year’s event even more special to help end our wonderful anniversary year on a high – but we can only do that with the support of our amazing community.”

Registration for the Santa Dash is £10 and £5 for under 18s. Entry into the Rudolph Rumble is £5.

All fees include Santa suit or reindeer antlers and a red nose.

Participants are also encouraged to raise as much money as possible in sponsorship.
