The funeral of a couple from Blackpool killed in the Tunisia beach massacre is taking place today.

Denis Thwaites, 70, and his wife Elaine, 69, from Knowle Avenue, North Shore, were among the 30 British holidaymakers killed in last month’s terrorist attack in the resort of Sousse.

Mr Thwaites, who was born in Stockton-on-Tees, played for Birmingham City from 1962 to 1972 after joining the club as an amateur in 1960.

He was part of the squad that won the club’s first major honour - the 1963 League Cup - and missed only six games between November 1964 and April 1966.

Mr Thwaites retired in 1972 at 27 and later moved with his family to Blackpool where he worked as a hospital porter.

It is understood his wife worked in the hotel business before she also retired.

Following the tragedy, the couple’s daughter, Lindsey, and son-in-law Daniel Clifford, said that “words can’t express what all the family are feeling at this difficult time”.

The service will be held at Fairhaven United Reform Church
