Footballer Melissa Smith, 15, who died after collapsing during a game, is to be laid to rest in Penwortham on Wednesday.
A funeral service for the Cadley FC player, who was a popular pupil at Penwortham Girls’ High School, will be held at St Teresa’s RC Church at 11am, followed by interment at Hill Road Cemetery.
Melissa was playing for Cadley at Euxton Girls in an under-16 premier league fixture when she fell to the ground just before half-time. Attempts to revive her failed and she was pronounced dead at the Royal Preston Hospital.
Amateur footballers from across the North West were due to pay their respects with a minute’s silence or applause before matches this weekend.
Both Cadley and Euxton have postponed all their games as a mark of respect.
Melissa’s family have asked for donations, instead of flowers, to go to either Cadley FC to help buy a defibrillator, or Penwortham Girls High towards a memorial trophy in her name.
