Last gasp talks are underway to rescue Preston’s comedy club, the Frog and Bucket, from closure next month.
Nightspot Evoke, which celebrates its first birthday this weekend, is hoping to keep the club alive by offering it a new home in its Church Street premises.
“Negotiations are at an advanced stage,” revealed Evoke’s business development manager Luke Maher. “It would be a big blow if Preston lost the Frog and Bucket.
“We would like to bring it here to Evoke as part of our plans to become the major venue in this city.”
Owners of the comedy club in Lord’s Walk announced recently they would be shutting up shop and concentrating on their Manchester club. The last show is scheduled to be on September 11 - the day before the launch of Freshers’ Week for thousands of new students arriving at the University of Central Lancashire.
Evoke has already signed a contract to be UCLan and its Student Union’s preferred venue for the coming year and bosses are keen to add the Frog and Bucket to that portfolio. They hope talks can be concluded within the week to buy the franchise and re-open it straight away.
“If it happens then we have big plans for the Frog and Bucket in Preston,” added Luke. “Our venue is much bigger than the current premises and, in addition to what the club already offers, we could look at booking stars of the calibre of Peter Kay and Sarah Millican.
“As things stand we hope talks will be completed successfully within the next week.”
Radio One DJs Mista Jam and CJ Beatz will top the bill on Saturday when Evoke celebrates a year in business with a birthday bash from midnight to 5am.
