A pair of friends from a Lancashire mountain biking club will complete a new cycling challenge when they take to a tandem for the first time in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.
Joanne Pooley and Jolene Pemberton have signed up for the Lostock Hall hospice’s Big Charity Bike Ride this Sunday.
To make it more of a challenge, they have decided to do it on a tandem.
They will complete the 20-mile circuit of the Preston Guild Wheel – one of two routes which make up the event which also includes the option of a 50-mile ride through the Fylde and Wyre Valley.
They will also be joined by fellow club members Rachel Millar, Julie Wardale, Pauline Powell and Kelly Twiname.
Joanne, who took up biking two years ago on the suggestion of her husband who is a keen cyclist, said: “We’ve done the Guild Wheel a few times so Jolene and I thought we’d up the challenge by doing it on a tandem instead.
“Turning corners is the trickiest bit but we are getting some practice in and are sure it will be great fun on the day.”
Jolene said: “It’s completely different to anything I’ve ever ridden before. We’re relying on good communication and co-ordination to get us around the circuit.”
• The bike ride takes place on Sunday. Riders can sign up on the day for £40 for the Challenge Ride and £25 for the Fun Ride. Call 01772 629171.
