Free business tips for freelance writers

Courses are on offer for freelance writers to improve their skills.

Arts group They Eat Culture is running courses in Preston and Lancaster as part of Creative Lancashire month.

Both courses are delivered by professionals to help budding writers get published in print and on the web.

The first session will be run by Jacob Sam-La Rose, on Web 2.0 for writers.

The course, at the Continental, South Meadow Lane, Broadgate, will take place on March 17 from 6 to 8pm.

Jacob is a working poet, workshop tutor and web consultant and during the two-hour workshop, he will guide writers through the world of Web 2.0, including creating a personal writing space and online identity through social marketing tools, including blogging and Twitter.

He will also show how using an online presence can develop creative work, and improve marketing and targeting the ideal audience.

And Sophie King will be hosting a course on finding freelance work at the Storey Institute, Meeting House Lane, Lancaster, on March 29.

The session is from 6pm to 8pm and includes spotting opportunities and developing contacts, writing pitches and developing proposals.

It also features building relationships with editors, agents and literature development professionals, combining income streams, and other aspects of freelance writing.

Both workshops, which have been organised with Lancashire County Council, are free.

Places must be booked in advance. Email writing@theyeatculture.org or jenn@theyeatculture.org
