The people of Penwortham will be among the first in the North West to benefit from free hydraulic outdoor gym equipment.

Using a £10,000 Awards for All grant and adding a little extra of its own cash,
Penwortham Town Council has bought the equipment to be installed outside its community centre in Kingsfold Drive.

Once fitted, there will be a leg extension machine, a squat machine, a shoulder press and a stepper. Instructions on how to use each piece of equipment will be displayed by each machine, along with a QR code that can be scanned using smart phones, to download a user video.

Steve Caswell, town manager for the council, said: “The machines will be fully adjustable so they can be used by anybody, however fit, whatever size, and we’re the first council in the North West to install something like this.

“You see similar things on the beach fronts on holiday and when we carried out a survey of what local people wanted, they said something like this, so we did it for them.”

An official opening of the outdoor gym will take place on Tuesday, March 24, by Penwortham Mayor, Coun Sue Prynn.

Steve added: “There’s room for more pieces of equipment on the site, so we’re going to monitor how well it goes and we might try and get funding for some more pieces in the future.”
