A Lancashire gym had an extra reason to keep fit as members raised almost £600 for lonely pensioners.

Personal trainers and users of Real Gym, in Ormskirk Road, Preston, took part in a fitness fund-raiser for Age Concern Central Lancashire.

The members took part in challenges such as a 40,000 metre row, a two-hour endurance run, a one-hour circuit challenge and a spinathon and raised £590.

Mark Christopher, manager, said: “As a private gym we wanted to give something back to the community.

“We were quite touched by the John Lewis advert at Christmas, which showed how older people can be lonely and we wanted to do something to help. The fitness fund-raiser was a successful venture and we are looking to do it again next year. Hopefully it will become an annual event.

“We do a lot of charities - we have also done some fund-raising for British Heart Foundation, raising more than £100 in January.”

Linda Chivers, chief executive of Age Concern Central Lancashire, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part as raising funds this way is vital in ensuring we are able to support local older people.”
