Firefighters carry water on back to tackle blaze

A dozen firefighters used backpacks filled with water to tackle a remote grassland fire.

Crews were called to Wildlife Trust land at Heysham Moss, near Morecambe, at 3.07pm on Monday.

Crew manager Dave Gillon from Morecambe station said the fire had been burning for around an hour before a member of the public dialled 999.

He said: "We had no real access to it. We had to progress on foot from about 400 metres away.

"It's a strange time to have a grass fire but I think everything is just that dry at the moment.

"We've just had a period of really dry weather and everything is totally dead. Nothing has started to come through yet."

He said they used the water packs and "beaters" and it took around two hours to put the fire out.

In total, around 300 square metres of land was destroyed. The cause is under investigation.
