Halo Wars (Xbox 360)
Halo Wars plunges players in to the Halo universe 20 years prior to the events of the original series.
You will witness the first attack of the alien "Covenant" and the response of the "UNSC military" force.
From the opening scene of the story mode you get a real feel you are going to be in for the same high level of gaming experience the series has offered to date, albeit in a completely new way, as a Real Time Strategy rather than the original trilogy's third person shooter style.
Previously it has proved quite difficult for developers to make RTS games work on consoles.
Thankfully, Microsoft has struck all the right notes with this title.
There is almost no slow down in the game, regardless of the number of units and action on screen at any time, and the controls seems to have been set up to help rather than challenge the player.
A fairly average AI system means the single player game is much less difficult than you might expect from any RTS game, especially on a second attempt, but this doesn't stop the game being incredibly enjoyable.
It instead makes a usually extremely difficult genre of game much less frustrating and much more welcoming.
However, if you are looking for an incredible warfare challenge that the AI simply won't offer the hardcore gamer, don't worry, stupidly good opponents on Xbox live will be quite happy to help you out, and as in most modern games, this really is the mode that will keep the game in collections for years to come.
With very good graphics, a more than usable control system and a well constructed gameplay system, I have no doubt that Halo Wars will become an RTS players' dream. It really is an excellent example of a strategy game, and not just on the Xbox.
A game which combines the engaging and captivating universe of the Halo series with a solid example of how to make an RTS game work on a games console… at last.
