Ask the experts - making a pot
Nadia Bowie is potty about pots ... what started as a weekly evening class has turned into a 20 year passion for making pots.
Read Nadia's tale of how it all began and watch the video to see for yourself how much fun it can be.
Growing up in the south of Cornwall meant I was surrounded by fabulous, rustic ceramics throughout my childhood. I came to love chunky earthenware mugs and big, substantial fruit bowls dipped in a variety of deep red, brown and green glazes.
However, it wasn't till many years after leaving Cornwall that I first got my hands into clay. I loved it from that first moment. It became a passion.
Those evening classes back in the 1980s at Tuson College, as it was then, were a highlight of my week and a welcome break for a harassed young mum. My husband Ian was bowled over when I presented him with his first-name mug - not exactly a piece of art! But, it was made by my own fair hands.
Many evening classes later and now even a ceramics degree under my belt, I am still fascinated by clay.
I'm drawn to it, like a duck is drawn to water. I throw, turn, coil, slab-build, sculpt; however the mood takes me. Creating from clay is such a pleasure. It is what I was meant to do.
Like Erick Liddell who sensed God's smile every time he ran his races, I sense God's smile when I'm elbow deep in clay!
Everyone should try pottery. Everyone can make something from a lump of clay. It comes naturally to kids. It's so relaxing, exhilarating and such a joy.
We are very fortunate to have a number of ceramic classes available to us here in Lancashire. Sign up and get started is my advice to you.
