When Leigh Whitley sent Lisa Chambers and their children out of the house last December, she knew to expect a surprise on their return.

But rather than come home to a house filled with Christmas decorations as she was anticipating, Lisa instead received a much more exciting, and life-changing welcome.

“When we got home to find no decorations outside, I wondered what he had been up to.”

She says: “He sent me, Lilly and Alfie out for a while and I thought he was putting Christmas decorations up outside the house as I had mentioned this to him.

“After a few hours he texted me to say we could come back, and when we got home to find no decorations outside, I wondered what he had been up to.

“I walked into our hallway with the children and it was full of balloons with a table at the end covered in flowers and a large box sat on top.

“I opened the box to find another then opened that one to find another and so on, until I found a small box inside.

“I opened it to find nothing! But there was also an envelope which I opened to find a message asking me to marry him so we could complete our family.

“He opened the door from the living room and had the ring in his hand.

“It was lovely, something that we will remember forever, and we are so glad the children will remember it too.”

The pair first met in Spain where their respective families had moved.

They enjoyed a Chinese meal and went to a karaoke bar on their first date.

Lisa, a sales and admin assistant, and Leigh, a HGV driver, married at Rufford Old Hall on August 14, followed by a reception at Rufford Arms.

Even the rain couldn’t dampen the couple’s spirits, and they even managed to surprise guests with their first dance.

Lisa explains: “We started with a traditional slow dance and then went into something a bit more upbeat, which we had been practising.

“It was a mix of different songs including ‘I Like Big Butts’ by Sir Mix Alot, ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson, and ‘Single Ladies’ by Beyonce.

“It was amazing, we had such a great time, and the shock on people’s faces as we went into the different dance was fab!”

The newlyweds honeymooned in Turkey.
