Family celebrates new director role in family

The family of Preston public health chief Maggi Morris is celebrating double job success in the family.

Maggi Morris, who is director of public health for NHS Central Lancashire, is married to Prof John Ashton, director of public health for Cumbria and a former regional director of public health for North West England.

Prof Ashton has been elected president of the UK Faculty of Public Health and John’s son Mathew has been appointed acting director of public health for NHS Knowsley on Merseyside.

Prof Ashton will take up his appointment for a period of three years in the summer and his son Mathew Ashton, known as Matt, is already in post and driving forward health improvement measures in Knowsley, a borough with a range of complex health needs.

Matt’s appointment means there are currently three directors of public health in the Ashton family.

John Ashton said: “I suppose it is unusual to have three currently active directors of public health in one family.

“I am proud of Matt’s achievement. He has worked hard to justify his appointment in Knowsley.”
