A Preston apprentice who is used to getting her hands dirty has been crowned Miss Teen Beauty of Lancashire 2014.
Madison Mitchell, of Royal Drive, Fulwood, usually spends five days a week in the male-dominated engineering industry, working at Printing Press Services International in the city
But now the 18-year-old, who is studying for her HNC at UClan’s Burnley campus, is set to compete for the overall title, representing her county at The Beauty Of The UK Final on October 19.
Madison said: “When I heard I’d been awarded the title of Miss Teen Beauty of Lancashire I was overwhelmed – in fact, I think I cried.
“I’m really excited to be representing Lancashire and I hope I do everybody proud.
“I don’t know how the guys at work will react when they find out I’ve been given the title because I haven’t been in yet but I’m sure they’ll be right behind me.”
Madison says engineering is something she has always been interested in.
“Ever since I was younger, it’s all I’ve been good at, working with my hands.
“I’ll be the first to admit that when I was at school my grades weren’t that great because I find it difficult to learn when I’m just being spoken to.
“But if I’m shown how to do something and I can learn by doing it myself, I tend to be pretty good at it.
“I love my work now.”
Though she enjoys her time as an engineering apprentice, Madison says there is nothing she loves more than coming home, washing off the dirt and oil of the day to put make up on and wear a fabulous dress.
She said: “It’s nice to live in a woman’s world every now and again.
“Pageant events get stereotyped far too often by the public and I believe I am living proof that it isn’t just sparkles and heels.”
Now all that is left to do for the brunette beauty and part-time model is to find sponsor ship, raise money for a number of charities, and find the right dress for the all -important final.
