Landmark gas cyclinders are set to be demolished for a new housing and road development.

National Grid has submitted plans to South Ribble Council to take down the two structures on land in Handshaw Drive, Penwortham, which have been unused since the 1970s.

The council has already granted permission for 350 homes on the gas works site and a new road linking The Cawsey and Carrwood Road, connecting parts of Penwortham and Lostock Hall.

Work on both the road and the housing development is set to begin in early 2015.
