Fly tipping was reported to bosses at Preston Council on Wednesday after household appliances were abandoned at the gates of Preston Cemetery on Miller Road.

Teams were working to clear up the dumped waste, and Town Hall bosses launched an appeal for witnesses to the “unacceptable” incident to come forward.

A row of five appliances was left outside the cemetery, with another fridge left in Cemetery Road and more dumped rubbish off New Hall Lane.

St Matthew’s councillor Jade Morgan said an investigation would take place, and said she hoped it wasn’t going to become a major problem in the area.

She said: “It is a sign of disrespect for people who really take pride in the ward, and it’s really disrespectful at the gates of the cemetery for people going in. Investigations will have to be made into the matter.

“It is shocking - you just question why people would do that.

“I just don’t understand it - why would you leave fridges and freezers in the streets?”

Preston Council’s director of environment, Adrian Phillips, said an investigation was under way.

He said: “The white goods that were left at the entrance of the Cemetery (on Wednesday) afternoon have now been removed by the team, as we are keenly aware that it is a particularly sensitive site to leave fly-tipped goods.

“We take fly-tipping very seriously and our investigation is under way into this illegal, insensitive and unacceptable incident.

“We would appeal to any witnesses who may have seen the vehicle, or individuals involved in this, or any other fly-tipping incident, to contact the litterline on 906909 right away.”
