Nimble youngsters from across Preston have been pitting their their athletics skills against each other at the city’s Under-nines Spring Mini-Athletics.

Organisers said that with schools getting more competitive, the gap at the top was narrowing.

But Ashton St Andrew’s CE Primary kept a tight grip on their position as top school with another gold medal performance.

Broughton took the silver medal spot. Barton St Lawrence and St Mary and St Andrew’s gave creditable performances to take joint third place.

Dean Brandwood, Preston City Council school games organiser, said: ”Broughton Business and Enterprise College provided their facilities and also a very professional group of sports leaders to officiate over the event.”

He added that as the opportunities grow for younger children to be competitive, more schools are entering the competitions.
