The University of Central Lancashire is expanding its catchment area to the sun soaked island of Cyprus.

The institution is set to open the first private UK university campus in October.

The ink is only just dry on the paperwork for the project, officially sanctioned by the Cypriot Ministry of Education and Culture after being awarded an educational licence.

Work on the 53 million Euro UK-style campus will start immediately, and has the backing of officials including the president of the Larnaca Chamber of Commerce, the British Council, the British High Commissioner and UKTI in Nicosia.

The deal follows hard on the heels of UCLan’s announcement last month outlining plans to build the UK’s first university campus in Thailand.

UCLan’s Cyprus campus will be in Pyla, close to Larnaca and its international airport to provide students from Cyprus, and the surrounding Eastern Mediterranean, North African and Middle Eastern countries with access to a world-class, UK-standard university education.

It is also the gateway to Turkish occupied Northern Cyprus.

A wide range of academic subjects will be offered, taught in English and building on UCLan’s strengths and local demand.

UK-based students will also benefit under UCLan’s new Advantage package, which guarantees every full-time, undergraduate student enrolling from this autumn with a chance to obtain a global experience or study period abroad as a standard part of its degree programme.

UCLan vice-chancellor Malcolm McVicar said: “Our vision is to create an international UCLan campus in Cyprus which incorporates superlative teaching and learning, research excellence and extensive knowledge transfer for business interaction in first class surroundings.

“In short, we will look to mirror the same outstanding educational experience received by our students in the UK.”

Dr Lee Chatfield, rector designate, added: “This development signals our intent to extend our global brand and become a major higher educational force on the world stage.

“We now have students from over 120 countries and 125 partnerships across the globe.”

The venture will see the construction of the first ever new university campus in Cyprus, built to an exacting UK specification, built in three stages and will provide purpose-built facilities.

UCLan will be responsible for the operational management and academic control of all campus programmes.

All teaching will be carried out in English and the degrees awarded will be University of Central Lancashire qualifications.

It is expected that student numbers will grow to around 3,000 within 10 years .

All staff will be PhD qualified and will be drawn form UCLan-seconded staff, qualified Cypriot academics and international recruits.

The Island of love...Aphrodite....goddess of love......Anyway yes it is divided but the border is now open for people to cross over. The Turkish Cypriots will also probably attend the university.

The Island of Love is divided in two with a military frontier between Turkish Cyprus and the Greek part. Who writes this stuff?
