Education really is an endless learning curve, as university students in Preston have been eager to show.

The MA Art Show by University of Central Lancashire scholars highlighted the work of 14 postgraduate courses within the School of Art, Design and Performance.

Work on display covered interior design, animation, games design, ceramics, surface pattern, toy design and graphic design.

Four interior design students joined forces to create the Urban Design Collective. Nick Schurok, Rebecca Rayson, Jocelyn Raine and Sarah Yarwood worked with a denim company to re-design their warehouse, based just outside the city centre.

Working on the project for six months, they generated ideas to increase the showroom fivefold, along with creating a new reception, photography studio and canteen.

Rebecca, 22, from Preston, said: “It was a fantastic opportunity and one which gave us real life work experience while also gaining our qualification.

“The project has been really interesting and given us a great flavour of what we want to do next as a company.”

Their designs will be realised once the warehouse’s renovations are completed.

Regenerating old and unwanted pieces of furniture was the idea behind Dodo Lab, set up by two MA Interior Design students.

Chorley’s Michaela Robinson and Formby’s Karen Smart upcycled an industrial chair, an industrial table and a set of three old workshop stools

The prototypes were given a Quick Response (QR) code and by scanning the barcode with a smartphone information was unlocked about its former life.

The code links through to a website which, along with explaining the history of the piece, allows people to purchase the gift through doing a good deed.

Anshika Mathur, 24, created a ceramic dedication to her family and friends.

It featured a mirror, red roses and a collection of photographs of her nearest relatives and close friends.

Preston based Daniel Startin used his computer games design skills to make science more interesting to children.

He worked with Harry Prestidge to create the interactive Tubes, which was commissioned by Flashbang Science.

The graphic designer completed his MA games design course in his spare time, said: “It’s been a fantastic opportunity to work with a professional company.

“We’re continuing to develop the product due to the feedback from the children using the game.”

Steve Bennett, course leader said : “This exhibition highlighted the very best art work that has been produced by this year’s MA students.

“What’s great is that many of the students have gained vital work experience while producing their top quality work.”
