Science teacher Nick Dunn is aiming to reach new heights .

But his daring quest has nothing to do with his classroom studies, but is a result of inspiration from his students.

Nick, a teacher at Holy Cross Catholic High, will be jumping out of a plane to raise funds for a bone cancer charity.

Three students at the Chorley school have had family affected by the disease – brothers Ben and Sam Clarkson and Alex Owen.

Although no lover of heights, he plans to leap from a height of 10,000 feet from a plane.

The 42 year-old, who lives in Euxton, said: “I am friends with a parent of Year 10 pupil Ben Clarkson and his brother Sam, in Year Seven, whose stepbrother James Clowe died of bone cancer when he was 11.

“I am skydiving, along with his mum and grandma on Saturday, March 4, which would have been James’ 18th birthday and therefore we are doing it in his memory and to support the Bone Cancer Research Trust.

“I have also been in touch with the mum of one of our former students Lauren Owen, who died of bone cancer 13 years ago when she was just 14 and in Year Nine at Holy Cross.

“Her brother Alex is in Year 10 now and, with having three students and their families affected by it, I feel it’s important to try and raise awareness.

“I have seen how difficult it is for these families and if there is some way of helping or preventing other families going through the same thing then it’s worthwhile.”

Nick has worked at Holy Cross for 10 years first as a PE and ICT teacher and now in science.

He said: “I am not the biggest fan of heights and I will be nervous having never done anything like this before but it’s a small thing to do to help a charity which is close to me and to Holy Cross.”
