Playing fair'¨is only goal

Pupils at one Preston school know all about playing fair as youngsters at St Stephen's CE Primary in Broadgate used the game of football to highlight equality in football and the importance of justice by staging a Fairtrade Football Tournament.

Volunteers from Fairtrade Preston provided the school with the opportunity to purchase some fairtrade footballs.

And the competition was organised during the school’s Fairtrade Week.

Headteacher Helen Wright said: “The event came shortly after the girls’ football team won the junior Preston Schools’ tournament and a
group of children from Year
Six enthusiastically organised a Fairtrade football competition where girls and boys were encouraged to play together in equally matched teams.

“The winners received medals and every child who took part received a Fairtrade snack and a drink.

“The opportunity to organise such an event gave children the chance to display leadership skills and to highlight the importance of encouraging fairness and opportunity for all.

“ It was a great day and all competitors had great fun.”
