A professor from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is to be a guest speaker at a European conference as a reward for his dedication to teaching.

Professor James Selfe has been invited to give the keynote speech at the 20th anniversary of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences’ English language physiotherapy programme.

The academic, based in UCLan’s school of sport, tourism and the outdoors, has taught at the Finnish institution on an annual basis since the course’s inception two decades ago.

Professor Selfe said: “I’m honoured to have been invited to give the keynote address, especially as I’ll be on the stage ahead of the Finnish Minister of Education and Science Krista Kiuru.”

The Pori based university created the first English Language physiotherapy programme in Scandinavia in 1994 because it noticed a large number of graduates left Finland to work in English speaking countries.

Professor Selfe said: “One of the reasons for the programme’s success is that they recruited physiotherapists to teach on the programme whose first language was English.

“I’ve been delighted to add my experience to the physiotherapy provision over the past 20 years and am looking forward to celebrating this milestone with my lecture.” He will give the talk on October 13.
