Language students get wise

Language groups from All Hallows High School and Cardinal Newman College are the first local students to benefit from UCLan's new Worldwise Learning Centre.

The language scholars attended the newly-opened centre's first Worldwise Skills Events.

The students enjoyed a variety of activities including; simultaneous interpreting, writing their names in Chinese calligraphy, learning how to text in Russian and testing their knowledge in the Worldwise Quiz.

The highlight of the two-day event was the simultaneous interpreting workshop, during which the students got to spend time in the interpreting booths and try out the new Brhler equipment.

Using the interpreting booths gave them a realistic idea of how language knowledge can be applied in real-life situations and the interesting career paths that having a second languages can open up.

Here's some of the feedback from students:

Catherine Richardson, All Hallows:

"Using the (interpreting) booths was really fun."

Hannah Wright, Newman College:

"I think that it was very informative and fun and has now made me think about languages at university."

Grace Osbourne, Newman:

''I really enjoyed meeting people from, and learning about, so many different cultures."

Sarah Parkinson, from All Hallows:

"I am thinking of doing languages with law and so I found the interpreting workshop really interesting as I hope to work within the European Parliament."

Natalie Charlesworth, Newman:

"The ICT communication would be useful for the future and the Chinese calligraphy was fascinating – totally different to anything I've done before."

Lauren O'Brien, Newman:

"It's really inspired me to look further into different languages and cultures. All the information was presented in an interesting way."

Christopher Work, All Hallows, said:

"I found it really interesting how languages and technology were combined. It made me consider going into a career in languages as it showed me the practical application of languages."
