Thousands of students will flock to Preston this week for the start of a new academic year.

The freshers are the first group of pay the increased fees, which will see them shelling out £9,000 a year for their studies - nearly £6,000 more than last year’s first years.

A fortnight of festivities began with a reception weekend for new students yesterday,

Tracie McCrudden, UCLan’s halls manager, said the university was planned a warm welcome for the new students and their parents

She said: “We welcomed over 2,000 new students to Preston, accompanied by parents and relatives, so wanted to create a real carnival atmosphere,”

On the day various professional entertainers, including comedian James Redman and the Comedy String Quartet were on hand to assist in welcoming Preston’s new students to the city.

Tracie added: “We have students arriving in Preston from all over the UK and our aim is to give them a memorable start to their university experience.”

A spokeswoman for the university said: “During the last two weeks our international students have been enjoying talks and trips to welcome them to the UCLan Campus, the city of Preston and the surrounding areas.”

Over the next two week the Students’ Union is running two weeks of fun-filled activities to welcome new and existing students to Preston.

These will cover a wide range of subjects to ensure the thousands of UCLan undergraduates and postgraduates get a “fantastic flavour “of what the university and city has to offer.

These will include a welcome BBQ, and trip to Alton Towers.

Radio One DJ Danny Howard will be playing at the Students’ Union and an array of fair will be showcasing the different activities on offer this year.

These include a Freshers Fair, sports and societies fair, there will also be an official Freshers Ball as well as a vintage fair, jobs and volunteering Fair.

The spokeswoman added that the idea of the freshers fortnight was to help new students settle in and give them a potted taste of what is one offer to them over the next three to four years.
