A village school which prides itself on being a “rural jewel” has an extra reason to shine.
The 104-pupil St Mary and St Andrew’s Catholic Primary in Barton, near Preston, has received a gold star from Ofsted after being officially declared outstanding.
Headteacher Anne Charnley said: “We shine in science, French, music and ICT with the support of specialist teaching.
“Extra-curricular activities are a big part of our school, which means we have gifted musicians and sports men and women.”
“All our children leave our school feeling valued and cared for, as well as achieving, with the majority achieving above the national average in maths and English.
“We have an excellent before and after school club where fun is had by all who attend.”
In the opening statement of their report the Ofsted inspectors said: “This outstanding school successfully achieves its mission to provide “a community where consideration and respect for others are paramount.
“Pupils are known well and treated as individuals and love learning in the ‘family’ atmosphere. The comment: ‘It’s good to be here!’ sums up pupils’ views.”
Anne said pupils are encouraged to make their own decisions and have certain responsibilities so that they can learn from their experiences.
Behaviour was described as exemplary , achievement outstanding and attainment well-above average.
The headteacher added: “The school council is a fantastic opportunity for all of the children to have their say on the day-to-day running of our school. With outstanding rural views, we offer a wide range of activities on the playground including a willow structure, the adventure play area and two sports fields, which makes playtimes a happy and vibrant place to be.”
The school offers a warm welcome and, in the words of the children, “everyone knows each other and plays together”. All staff ensure the needs of children are carefully considered, mindful of the Gospel values, through care, guidance and support of the highest quality.
Anne said staff and pupils were delighted with the response from Ofsted and added: “Every day is an Open Day at St Mary and St Andrew’s.
“We are a rural jewel where we nurture, motivate, achieve and inspire.”
