College outstanding in 'every way', say inspectors

A Preston college is starting the summer holidays on a high note - after being named the best in the city.

Government officials have officially declared Cardinal Newman College an outstanding place to study.

The Lark Hill institution has been awarded the top grade in every area after a visit by Ofsted inspectors.

Opening comments in the inspector's official report said Cardinal Newman was an outstanding college in "every aspect".

The inclusive ethos was highlighted as providing a strong foundation in which respect for different faiths and cultures enabled students to flourish "in an atmosphere of mutual respect".

The report added: "Achievements and standards are outstanding. Success rates and the proportion of students achieving high grades are very high."

Students' academic progress and personal development were described as "exceptional".

Teaching and learning were also declared outstanding along with guidance and support.

The leadership and management were also outstanding. The inspectors said: "Inspirational leadership, supported by highly competent senior managers and governors, sets a very clear direction for the college as a centre of educational excellence."

Equality of opportunity is also said to be outstanding.

Principal Steve Pegg said the report marked the end of a successful year which has seen the college top the national performance tables in January 2009.

Also, the first two phases of a 35m development were completed and applications also reached record levels.

Mr Pegg said: "I am delighted. Reference is made throughout the report to the fact that students enjoy their time at college, are exceptionally well supported when they are here, and that their spiritual, moral and cultural development is excellent."

The popular college is traditionally oversubscribed and currently has 2,209 students on the roll.

Most are A level students and around half of them come from the college's 10 partner Catholic High schools.

The rest are from high schools around Preston and South Ribble.

Newman has grown considerably over the years and, according to the latest inspection team, improvements since the last inspection are outstanding.
