This week's columnist is Gillian Beeley, chief executive of Lancashire Education Business Partnership which has over 5,000 students going out on work experience in the next two weeks.
Lancashire Education Business Partnership, as an independent broker of work-related learning, is dealing successfully with two major challenges – the impact of the recession and the changing face of education which gives students more scope to learn from, through and about work.
We receive a lot of positive feedback from the education and business partnerships that we develop and support, even in these difficult times.
There are many benefits for businesses to get involved with their local schools and colleges.
I believe we underestimate the potential of our young people to make an impact on our businesses beyond corporate social responsibility.
Comments vary from "having the student on placement has really increased staff morale" through to "supporting my local school with their work-related learning programme has had a positive impact on our reputation".
Work-related learning is crucial for over 40,000 pupils as it helps them to put their education into context.
Whilst over 20,000 firms are already working with us, we still are concerned that the current economic climate could possibly deter companies from getting involved.
What I would say is that it is vital that we encourage employers to invest in young people by developing the skills which successful businesses value.
