BRAVE staff from a Wigan off licence have told how a botched robbery resulted in one worker being attacked with a stick on Bank Holiday Monday.

Muhammed Farhan, who owns the Best One store on Scholes precinct, says that the bungling thief picked up a drink before heading to the door and shouting: “Catch me if you can”.

Unfortunately for him, that’s exactly what staff did before phoning police who quickly arrived and arrested him.

However, in the fracas, he hit one of the shop attendants, Faisal Aslam, over the head with a stick he was carrying causing a nasty gash.

Mr Farhan said: “The guy came in with a big rod in his hand.

“He went near the fridge and picked up a drink before turning around and walking out.

“When he got near the door, he turned around and said ‘catch me if you can’.

“So Faisal ran and grabbed him and dragged him back in front of the till.

“When he had hold of him, the man hit him and caught him on his head with the stick.

“After that, though, we got hold of him and waited until the police came and took him away.”

Thankfully, the injuries Mr Aslam sustained were not too serious.

Although he wasn’t available to speak to the Evening Post, Mr Farhan says he was able to return to work pretty swiftly.

“He’s doing fine,” he added.

“He was back into work that day so he isn’t too badly hurt.”

A spokesman for GMP confirmed that they attended the scene and arrested the man involved.

However, police were unable to confirm his age. It’s also unknown whether he was charged or bailed.
