Drunken 'ladettes' see on-the-spot fines soar

The number of binge-drinking 'ladettes' fined for being drunk and disorderly in Lancashire has soared by more than 47% in just three years, figures have revealed.

Police dished out 1,103 on-the-spot fines to women for being drunk and disorderly in 2007, compared to 750 in 2005 – a jump of 47.1%.

The number of drunken men fined during the same period in Lancashire increased by 19.7% from 4,006 to 4,795.

The number of fines served on women aged between 16 and 17 jumped by 50% during that period, while fines handed out to women between 18 and 20 rocketed by 77.3%.

The figures were published by the Government as a Parliamentary answer.

Lib Dem home affairs spokesperson Paul Holmes said: "These figures are yet more evidence of a binge-drinking ladette culture, particularly among teenage girls. As the number of drunken women

on our streets has increased, so has the number of violent assaults being carried out by women."

The figures came as Schools Secretary Ed Balls announced that Lancashire is getting around 20,000 of Government cash to help fund a crackdown on teenagers who spend their summer holidays binge drinking.

The county is among 69 "youth crime priority areas" sharing a cash pot of 1.4m.

Police and local authority staff will confiscate alcohol, break up groups of young people who are getting drunk and get them to sign contracts promising to behave.
