A CARING businessman has received hundreds of donations after appealing for help for homeless and vulnerable people this Christmas.

Karl Fleming, who runs Buckshaw Fitness in Buckshaw Village, decided to do something for people who use the Foxton Centre in Preston.

He used social media to ask his clients, friends and family to donate clothing and other items for those in need.

He has already filled 13 sacks with clothes, including 50 pairs of new waterproof trousers.

He has also been given sleeping bags and quilts.

Karl has received support from supermarket Waitrose, which donated vouchers worth £250 so he could buy food and other essentials for care packages for homeless people.

And he is also in talks with the manager of another supermarket, who he hopes will give something to his appeal.

Karl, 37, said: “The take-up has been tremendous.

“I have had members wanting to volunteer their services as well.

“It’s been overwhelming.”

Karl decided to do something to help after watching a video on Facebook featuring a homeless person.

He said: “It got me thinking that there are a lot of people out there who don’t have luxuries over Christmas and don’t have anywhere to go.

“Sometimes it’s just circumstances have played them a really rough hand.

“I do quite a lot of races for charity and I thought this was something I wanted to do for the Christmas period.”

It is the first time Karl has organised a collection, but he now plans to do it annually and hopes to support the Foxton Centre at other times too.

Karl is still collecting donations and is making plans to take the items to the centre, on Knowsley Street, Avenham, on either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

He is continuing to ask people to make contributions and can arrange for items to be collected.

Karl said: “We are struggling with clothing for women. There’s not a lot of female clothes collected yet and I would like to try to get more.

“If anyone has any things, that would be great.”
