Disabled fee 'should be axed'

Disabled people in Preston should not have to pay to get a residents' parking permit, it has been claimed.

Two city councillors, Martyn Rawlinson and Bhikhu Patel, both Labour, say disabled badge holders should not have to stump up 25 for the permits because they have no choice but to park right outside their front doors.

They have now put forward a notice of motion urging the council to scrap the charges for disabled people.

Coun Rawlinson said: "It just seems a ridiculous anomaly and it needs addressing. It is not the money, it is the principle."

He estimates the council would lose around 2,000 a year if disabled people were exempt from the scheme.

Eric Fazackerley, deputy leader of the Tory-controlled council and resources boss, said: "As a generality I don't like subsidies but it is a point I have some sympathy with."

Melanie Close, manager of Preston Disability Information Service Centre, said: "It is a good idea and will help the council meet its obligations under disability and equality duty, because all they are doing is making a reasonable adjustment for disabled people who need to park as near as possible to their homes."
