Daredevil Alex to do Old Trafford abseil

A young daredevil will be making a leap of faith by taking part in a 140ft abseil at Manchester United's football ground.

Alexa Farrar, 10, of St Mary's Close, Walton-le-Dale, will be the youngest person taking part in the charity event to boost funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Alexa, who suffers from cystic fibrosis herself, will be taking part in the challenge with her dad Phil after years of begging to be allowed to do it.

Parents Phil and Dianne, who also have a five-year-old daughter Amelia, say Alexa is a real thrill-seeker and has never let her condition stand in her way.

Cystic fibrosis is one of the UK's most common, life-threatening inherited diseases.

It causes the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, to become clogged with thick sticky mucus resulting in chronic infections and inflammation in the lungs.

Alexa was diagnosed with the condition shortly after birth as both her parents had discovered they were carriers of the disease. Her sister does not have CF.

Dad Phil, 39, said: "My nephew had cystic fibrosis so me and my wife had blood tests a couple of years before we had Alexa.

"It was discovered that I was a cystic fibrosis carrier, but to our shock, we found out Dianne was a carrier too."

Alexa was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when she was only nine days old and has been on medication and has had daily physiotherapy since she was a baby.

Luckily, because Alexa's condition was picked up so early, she is very well. She takes antibiotics and enzymes to help break down her food and has to do physio twice a day to keep her condition under control.

Alexa, who goes to St Mary's and St Benedict's Catholic Primary School in Bamber Bridge, will be abseiling 140 feet from the North Stand at Old Trafford on Sunday March 28.

Alexa said: "I am really excited about the abseil because I love scary challenges and it gives me a great chance to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust."

Money raised from the abseil will pay for the costs of young people with CF trying out a new, potentially life saving treatment.
