Crossing conundrum infuriates neighbours

Thousands of pounds are set to be splashed out on building a crossing at a point where no-one crosses a busy Preston road, according to the woman who is set to become its 'neighbour'.

Health worker Karen Gemson, 50, has said the 'pedestrian refuge island' proposed to be installed outside her home on Longridge Road, Ribbleton, would be better placed a few yards up the road outside the local Tesco.

It would see an island installed in the middle of the road, double yellow lines painted down either side with flashing yellow lights.

Highways experts at Lancashire County Council insist that there has been a recorded number of accidents on the stretch between the junctions with Grange Avenue and Lauderdale Road.

She said: "They keep telling me that there is a history of recorded injury accidents on this stretch of road but even their own website says there has only been one.

"It will be a complete waste of time and money because, even if you put a crossing here, people will not use it, they will still cross up by the shop. Instead they are going to put yellow lines down here, an island, all that expense and it will have no benefit to anyone."

Paul Dunne, the county council's principal engineer, said a decision was yet to be taken on whether the island would be installed."

He said: "A pedestrian refuge is being proposed along with other road safety measures to address an accident problem along thisroad. The proposed site was deemed to be the most suitable location."
