POLICE have launched a manhunt after a dramatic shotgun robbery outside a cash and carry business in Preston.

Two masked men pounced on a security guard outside the JTF Megastore Warehouse on Pittman Way, Fulwood at around 1.50pm yesterday.

They threatened him with a single barrelled sawn off shotgun and escaped with the cash box containing £3,000. The robbers were wearing Balaclavas and tracksuits, they fled the scene in a silver Ford Fiesta that was driven by another man.

The box was later found dumped by the roadside 400 yards away in Oliver’s Place. A vehicle matching the description of the getaway car was also found abandoned on a private road off Sandy Lane in Woodplumpton.

DI Jane Webb from Preston CID said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim and he was very fortunate to not have been injured.”

The raiders struck as the victim was taking cash from the store back to his security van.

Preston CID are investigating and scene of crime officers examined the discarded cash box that was found full of cash for fingerprints as police dogs combed the area nearby.

DI Webb said: “The cash box that the offenders took is a specially adapted container which activates red smoke so the offenders will now be covered in red dye.

“Thankfully, we have located the box not far away from where the robbery took place, fortunately with the cash, which was covered in the dye, still inside.

“I am asking anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle, the offenders or indeed anyone who has any information about this incident to call us on 101 immediately.”

A senior member of JTF staff said: “I am not able to comment at this stage.”
