A perfume thief who went on a rampage through Preston city centre, smashing the fronts of three stores, was today being hunted by detectives.
The thief hurled metal grid covers through the windows of stores as he looted perfume and mobile phones.
Det Sgt John Crichton, of Preston CID, said: “Perfumes are easy for thieves to sell, and we had two or three similar crimes in Lancaster Road a few weeks ago.
“Somebody obviously thinks its lucrative crime but we are hot on their trail.
“Anything that affects the economy of the town is taken very seriously.”
Detectives launched a probe on Sunday after a security alarm activated at Boots on Fishergate in Preston at 11.36pm.
Patrols went to the scene and found the window was broken at the front, with a display screen damaged.
Several bottles of perfume and aftershave were stolen. A haul of fragrance was found dumped on Cannon Street a short time later.
Less than an hour later, at 12.35am Monday, an alarm went off at Lloyds pharmacy on Lancaster Road.
Officers arrived to find a road grid cover had been thrown through the front window, and that the thief had again stolen a few hundred pounds worth of perfume.
A passer by rang police to report a third burglary at 1.22am on Monday at Cash in a Dash on Church Street after seeing someone climb through a broken front window.
The man was seen running down an alleyway and a second man may have been present.
Around £1,000 of mobile phones were stolen.
Witnesses call police on 101.
