Police are appealing for information following a violent robbery at a bookmakers.
The drama unfolded at Ladbrokes in Yorkshire Street, Morecambe at 9.30pm on Thursday just after two members of staff had locked the front door.
As they were stood at the far end of the shop, they heard banging and saw three hooded, masked men attempting to kick the front door open.
The trio managed to kick the door open and ran into the shop, with one carrying an axe. The other two jumped over the shop counter. The members of staff – one male, one female - ran out of the rear door feeling terrified.
The female worker was pushed to the floor in an alley outside of the shop, where one of the offenders shouted for her to hand over keys to the safe.
The offenders ransacked the safe, stealing a substantial amount of cash and coins.
They made off through the front door, running along Yorkshire Street, turning onto Regent Road.
Shortly after the robbery, a red saloon type car was seen driving off from the area at high speed.
A red Vauxhall Calibra was then found abandoned nearby on Halden Road.
Det Insp Bev Foster from Morecambe CID said: “This was a frightening robbery which has resulted in one of the shop workers suffering a fractured arm just for being at work at the wrong time.
“I would ask anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the robbery, or anyone who may have seen the offenders running away from the scene, to contact police.
“I am keen to trace the owner of the red Vauxhall vehicle so if this belongs to you, or you know who owns this car, again, please get in touch for us to eliminate you from our inquiries.”
One of the men was 6 ft, of a slim build wearing a blue hooded waterproof jacket and camouflage trousers.
Another was 5ft 9ins to 5ft 10ins, wearing a dark jacket with a grey hooded top underneath and dark trousers. He was also wearing a dark coloured bandana over his face.
And the third was 5ft 9ins to 5ft 10ins, of a heavier build, wearing a dark hooded jacket and dark trousers.
Anyone with information can call 101.
Three men aged 22, 20 and 25 from Morecambe were arrested on suspicion of robbery on Friday and have been bailed until June 23.
