A man was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after the 'stolen van' he was travelling in crashed into a wall, say police.

Officers attempted to stop the Citroen Berlingo, which they believed was stolen, in Halton Road, Halton at around 1am Friday May 5.

According to police, the van then failed to stop and a three minute pursuit began which ended when the van crashed into a wall.

Fire services from Lancaster were called to the scene to ensure that the vehicle was safe.

A spokesman for the police said: "Patrols spotted a van which they thought was stolen in Halton. The driver failed to stop for police and the van then crashed into a wall.

“A 26-year-old (of no fixed address) who taken to hospital was later arrested on suspicion of burglary, has since been released under investigation.

“A 19-year-old who was arrested at the scene (from Lancaster) on suspicion of taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent and possession of a bladed article has also been released under investigation.

“A third man, aged 22, from Lancaster believed to be the driver, was traced and arrested on May 7 (2 days after the incident) on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving, taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, theft, driving whilst disqualified and going equipped to steal. He’s also been released under investigation.
