A married father-of-two who was found with fatal shot wounds to his head took his own life, a coroner has ruled.
Ian Mercer, who was born in Rhodesia, was found by his wife Angela in the bathroom of their home on Railway Road, Chorley, on February 13.
Mr Mercer, who worked as an engineer, held a shotgun licence and an inquest at Preston Coroner’s Court heard the gun was kept in a locked cabinet.
The 46-year-old was not known to have suffered any mental health issues and had left no note.
Expressing his condolences to Mr Mercer’s family, Deputy Coroner Simon Jones told his grieving relatives: “You will appreciate when I explain what an inquest is here to do, but the one question missing is why.
“That’s the one question families want answered more than any other and it’s the one question I’m unable to deal with .
“What has provoked him to do what he did remains unclear.”
