They have said a man approached her and was talking to the girl, who has long dark hair, before she entered the car and was taken on a three-mile journey to Hapton. Police say she spent 20 minutes in the black vehicle with the man and was found by members of the public in Whitefield Street in a “vert distressed” state.

An urgent search for the offender has now been launched, and specially trained officers are offering support to the girl and her family.

The man is described as white, with a tanned complexion. He is believed to be aged in his 40s and is bald.

Det. Chief Insp. Joanne McHugh, from East CID, said: “This investigation is very much in its early stages and we are determined to find out exactly what has happened to this young child and to catch the man who has done this.

I would like to reassure the public that while incidents of this kind are rare, we have stepped up police patrols in the area
