A trial date has been set for two ex-footballers accused of murdering an off-duty police officer.

PC Neil Doyle, 36, died following an attack in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of December 19, during a night out with colleagues.

Andrew Taylor, 28, a former Burscough player, and Christopher Spendlove, 30, who played for Preston North End as a schoolboy, appeared via video link at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday, accused of murder.

They had a trial date set for June 22.

Taylor, of Cherrytree Road, Huyton, and Spendlove, of Brandearth Hey, Stockbridge, are also accused of charges grievous bodily harm with intent to officers Michael Steventon and Robert Marshall, who were with PC Doyle.

Judge Clement Goldstone QC, the Honorary Recorder of Liverpool, set a plea and case management hearing for March 20 with a pre-trial review in June.
