A police investigation has been launched after a wheelie bin fire spread to a house.

Firefighters were called to Moss Avenue, Preston, at 1.30am on Thursday, after a neighbour spotted flames coming from the bin, which was against a brick wall.

By the time crews arrived, the fire had spread to a window and a door, causing significant damage.

The two elderly occupants of the house had managed to evacuate themselves unharmed.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Luckily we got there quickly and were able to stop the fire spreading, but it had potential to be very serious.

“Apparently there were quite a lot of fires started in bins last night and the police are investigating.”
